A Glimpse into the Enchanting World of Haitian Cut-Metal Art 

Haitian cut-metal art, also known as découpé, is a vibrant and dynamic art form that has captivated the world with its intricate designs and expressive imagery. Rooted in the rich cultural heritage of Haiti, this art form has evolved over the decades, becoming a symbol of Haitian creativity and resilience. 

Origins and Evolution

The origins of Haitian cut-metal art can be traced back to the 1950s, when American painter DeWitt Peters stumbled upon a unique sight while traveling through Haiti. Intrigued by the intricate iron crosses adorning many of the above-ground tombs, he sought out the blacksmith responsible for these remarkable creations. That blacksmith was none other than Georges Liautaud, a man who would soon become a pioneer of Haitian cut-metal art.   

Liautaud's initial creations were primarily focused on religious motifs, inspired by his Catholic faith and the vibrant Vodou traditions of Haiti. However, his artistic vision soon expanded, and he began incorporating elements of Haitian folklore, everyday life, and natural imagery into his works.  

The ready availability of discarded oil drums, which were used to transport goods to Haiti, provided a readily accessible source of material for Liautaud and other emerging cut-metal artists. These drums, once destined for the scrap heap, were transformed into canvases for their artistic expression.  

The Croix-des-Bouquets Hub

Over time, the village of Croix-des-Bouquets emerged as the epicenter of Haitian cut-metal art. Attracted by Liautaud's mentorship and the thriving artistic community, aspiring metalworkers flocked to the village, eager to learn the craft and contribute to this unique art form.  

The clang-clang of metal on metal, the rhythmic banging of hammers against chisels, became the soundtrack of Croix-des-Bouquets, a testament to the dedication and passion of its artisans. The area became a known tourist destination. However, since the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021 the situation in Croix des Bouquets has become dire. Due to gangs in the area, the deteriorated security issues have forced most of the artists to relocate with their families, leaving Croix-des-Bouquets to be overrun by gangs. Despite the difficulties they are still producing this beautiful art; a testament to resilience.  

The Artistic Process

The creation of Haitian cut-metal art is a labor of love, a meticulous process that demands both skill and artistry. It begins with the artist sketching their design on a piece of cardboard. This pattern is then transferred onto the flattened metal sheet, typically derived from discarded oil drums.  

Using chisels and hammers, the artist meticulously cuts and shapes the metal, breathing life into their design. Each piece is carefully crafted, the metal's surface adorned with intricate patterns and expressive details.  

Once the sculpting is complete, the artist proudly signs their name onto the work, a mark of their artistry and dedication.

Crafting Beauty: The Artisanal Journey of Beadworx's Beaded Masterpieces

In the heart of Haiti, a captivating art has blossomed – Beadworx is a fusion of wire structures and glass beads meticulously woven onto frames by skilled artisans. The roots of this whimsical folk-art traces back to Haiti’s African ancestors in South Africa, and was introduced to Haiti in 2015 by Extol. The first few artists who learned this intricate technique still work with Beadworx today. As the experts, they help train new artists interested in this work. There is immense pride in the art our team makes.  

By offering artisans the chance to be part of the Haiti Beadworx team and work conveniently from their homes, Beadworx not only empowers individuals but also expands access to the global market. 

The Artistic Process

At Beadworx, each piece of art is a careful blend of industrial precision and the personal touch of the cottage industry. In our atelier, artisans craft frameworks or jigs from wood, aluminum sheets, and nails—essential for shaping wires into the diverse forms of our creations.   

With these jigs, the wire frames are expertly cut and bent into precisely sized and shaped pieces, by skilled hands. In the welding section, spot welders work their magic, transforming metal bits into 3D forms that bring the designs to life. 

Buckets filled with a myriad of beads await, and our artisans skillfully string them onto prepared wires, creating a symphony of colors. Tilted buckets, weaving wires to collect beads, create a symphony of colors along the length of the wire. As cottage industry artistry takes center stage, kits are assembled for artisans to continue the weaving process from home, seamlessly blending craftsmanship with the rhythm of family life.  

Upon the return of these pieces to our main atelier, each product goes through quality checks, and addingthe final toucheslike the eyes. Every step reflects our commitment to quality, infusing a vibrant spirit into each piece while supporting Haiti’s community and culture.
